This year’s State of the Union address was a watershed moment for our movement: President Biden endorsed landmark digital reforms that our campaign has been pushing for.
In his address, President Biden echoed the calls of the Designed with Kids in Mind campaign, calling for a ban on targeted advertising for children online and “safety by design” standards that require apps and websites “to prioritize and ensure the health, safety and well-being of children and young people above profit and revenue in the design of their products and services.”
We’re so thrilled to see these issues highlighted on the national stage after months of momentum to rein in Big Tech following the revelations of Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen. These measures are the strongest tools we have to protect kids and teens from the risks facing them online.
When the president of the United States agrees with you that kids should come before profits and it’s time to stop surveillance advertising to young people, it’s a pretty big deal! In the coming months, we’ll be working closely with the White House, Congress, and our allies to keep advocating for the protections, regulations, and rules we need to ensure that children and teens are finally able to access the internet they deserve.
Stay tuned!
